Launching Electronic File Types within Frontline

Launching Electronic File Types within Frontline

Frontline LMS module allows you to use the below online electronic file types or documents as training content.

  • Microsoft Office document such as Word or PowerPoint.
  • HTML file created with a HTML authoring tool.
  • A graphic (picture or drawing) file.
  • A PDF file (created from any of the above native files).
  • A network-resident CBT course that launches with an executable file.
  • A custom HTML-WBT course hosted on a web server.

Below are the guidelines for uploading Files

  • The minimum permission needed to perform this task is Division Admin or Division Author.
  • The training content can be located anywhere - Internet, Intranet, a PC hard drive or a CD - as long as you can enter an address (URL) for it.
  • If the file is stored in a document management system, you will need to find the file's URL for entering in the training item's URL field.
  • For some document management systems, the file access is controlled by user authentication (user ID and password).
    • If so, contact your Frontline administrator. Special script may need to be written to access such files.
  • You can physically upload a file to Frontline server. In this case, above restrictions do not apply. The file can be uploaded from your C: drive or a network drive.
  • When uploaded to Frontline server, the file is universally available across all your divisions, regardless of any network permission issues.
  • An upload folder must be created in your company and division the first time a file is uploaded.
  • Frontline keeps a "View" record when a learner launches above content via the training launcher. However, this does not guarantee that the learner has actually read the training.

  • It is strongly recommended that you create a test in Frontline and attach it to above content. In contrast, for a WBT training item, the record is kept following completion of the entire course (if free navigation is not enabled).

How to Create the Training Item

Follow these steps to create a training item that launches a file type discussed above.

The name or title of the training item should be easily recognizable. Follow the naming conventions for training items in the division where you are creating the training item.

  1. Select Curriculum > Training Items or Author > Training Items.
  2. Select New.
  3. Enter the training item Title, Item Code, and select the training Item Type from the drop-down box.
  4. If the content is a Word, PowerPoint, Excel or HTML document, image or PDF file, then select Choose File and browse to the actual file that is being used for training.
  5. If the content is a Network-resident CBT course, then select Choose File and browse to the application's executable file.
  6. If the content is a HTML-WBT course, then Enter the URL of the course's home screen into the URL: field. It should be in the http:// format.
  7. Check Upload to Frontline Server box if applicable.
    1. When checked, file selected in the Browse URL field is physically uploaded to the Frontline server and launched from there for your learners.
  8. Check Test Required, if you want learners to take a test in Frontline for this training item.
  9. Enter the optional fields described in training item form.
  10. Select Save.
  11. Select Preview to confirm that the training content will launch properly.

HTML-WBT course and Frontline communication must be tested before assigning to learners.

How to Link a Test (Optional)

When you check Test Required, this requires the learner to scroll through the document and take the test by clicking a link installed near the bottom of the document.

Be sure to uncheck Allow Test-Out in the training item form. This makes the link that you added the only way to launch the test.

  1. Select Curriculum > Training Items
  2. Select your training item from the available options
  3. Select Tests
  4. Select New
  5. Search for the desired test.
  6. Select the radio button next to the Test title
  7. Select Save
